Entertainment as a tool for National and Human Security
Entertainment today, has become a source of inspiration that offers hope for the future generation. It is a valuable and indeed a vital tool for promoting Nigeria’s image, boosting our economy and improving international cooperation. Entertainers are not just singers or actors, they are also representatives who act as pseudo-ambassadors by projecting Nigeria – whether positively or negatively – in their work, thus attracting some sort of reaction to the country and the continent.
Unlike formal diplomacy, entertainment has become a subtle method of engagement in contemporary international relations. Social media is arguably the most powerful tool for information dissemination and activism. It played active role in the Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, and Black Lives Matter protests.
Artistes like Falz, Ruggedman, Idris Abdulkareem, Tunde Kelani, Genevieve Nnaji and even the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti, are no longer viewed as just singers or actors but also as representatives of Nigeria who project Nigeria and Africa through their works, thus attracting development to Nigeria and Africa in general. Findings indicate that, while cultural diplomacy promotes Nigeria’s image and international cooperation, it also enhances national development with income gotten from foreign investors and tourists.
Ruggedman, like many other Nigerian artistes, is using his talent as an musician for positive activism and to promote national development. He joined us on the good citizen show to discuss “Entertainment as a tool for National and Human Security”. On the show, he reiterated the need to employ smarter non-violent ways to fighting injustice and advised that we adopt subtle methods when passing a message.
